General reaearch into title sequences

A title sequence is the method by which cinematic films or television programs present their title, key production and cast members, or both, utilizing conceptual visuals and sound. It usually follows but should not be confused with the opening credits, which are generally nothing more than a series of superimposed text.

Title sequences have many different jobs to do , for example they have to set the mood or is ussually a taster of what to come in the film.the music in a title sequence also plays a very important part in setting the mood for the viewer.

kyle cooper is the most succesfull modern disigner of motion picture opening sequences.





His work includes the opening credit sequence of seven , arlingtong road ,f lubber , the mummy, zoolander , spiderman , dawn of the dead , spider man 2 , godzilla , superman returns , The incredible hulk , tropic thunder and two of the games of metal geat solid.


His work in the credits field is often compared to Saul bass , another great designer of opening sequences .


Saul bass is a academy award winning filmmaker , but he is best known for his design in animated title sequences.

His work includes the man with the golden arm wich was a film about a man with a heroin addiction . and north by northwest

old and new title sequence compared

I have chosen the film pysicho as my old film and the fourth kind and my new film.

Music: the music is very different in both films , the pysicho has a very dark and pounding song wich really makes you nervous. The fourth kind has a gentle piano song being played wich is relaxing and peacfull but also very eerie because you know what type of film it is.

intro: phsychos intro is bassically a car driving through the county to a hotel , very simple but with the music that is being played it makes you think , where are they going and what will happen to them?.The fourth kinds intro is also very simple but has i think a much bigger affect on the audience , whilst having the gentle song played it descibes the statistictics of people that have gone missing and have never been found ,also about alien sightings wich i think in very unearving because it makes you believe there is a element of truth to these storys.

title: They both display there titles differently , pyhicos is bold lettering wich goes with there pounding music , the fourth kind is very different , its simple white lettering with a black backround so that it is bold but also very eerie with the music.

character: The two title sequences are very simular when it comes to characters , they both give no prievew of them. phyicos is just a car driving and the fourth kinds is just lettering ona l ight and strange background.

Strory: pysico gives no preivew of the story but the fourth kind gives and intro of the story to come with some very interesting but disturbing statistics to give the hint of the story to coe. it says things like for example 4 ,000 people a year dissapear and are never found, pretty creepy stuff.

The two title sequences i will be looking at is saw 5 and nightmare on elm street 3. Saw 5 is a very simple start , as usual it is a unsuspecting victom in a gruesome trap fighting for his life . As the traps always end badely for the victem we know that that person will not be in the rest of the film , so it dosent really give us a knowledge on who is the rest of the film. nightmare on elm street 3 is a little bit different when it comes to characters. It starts with a group of kids wich u know is the main gruop of kids in the film and they are attacked by the main villian but every one survives. this introduces the main villian and the main characters. This also was the way we chose to prsent our story.

Although they are both in the same genre of film , they both give of different messages. saw 5 gives a sense of a brutal and gory film because of it immediate slaughter theme . you get this message by by the trap and how it ends , the man fails to escape and is cut into two with a giant pendulam .The nightmare on elm street gives of of very differnet vibe , the main characters are introduced straight away.You know this because at the begining it starts with a flashback of the previous film and how that one ended.

The music is also very different , in saw 5 the music is pounding and dramatic toreally get you on edge and out of your comfort zone , this is good because it does get you into the mood for the genre. were the nightmare on elm streets music is eery and un nearving wich really does give you a sense of the type of horror film nightmare on elmstreet is going to be. This was the kind of music we was going to use for our openingle sequence.

I chose these two title sequences because they are both very different , this will show you how different horror titles can be and how they are different. As a group we have decided to make a eery , ghost an poltergiest kind of film so we will need slow but scary music for the background. If i had to choose wich film i wanted mine to be most like it would be nightmare on elm street because although it is scary it is also obvious that there is a complex and horrifying story behind it all.
