psycholgical horror

Psychological horror is a subgenre of horror fiction that relies on character fears, guilt, beliefs, eerie sound effects, relevant music and emotional instability to build tension and further the plot. Psychological horror is different from the type of horror found in "splatter films," which derive their effects from gore and violence, and from the sub-genre of horror-of-personality, in which the object of horror does not look like a monstrous other, but rather a normal human being, whose horrific identity is often not revealed until well into the work, or even at the very end.

EVALUATION

The title of our project is the unseen , we decided over this name because of the plot of the story. The plot of our story is that a group of young children play with a ouiji board in one of there bedrooms late at night. After some strange ocurences they put the ouiji board into a wardrobe and continue with there lives. years later the children begin to witness strange things and trace it back to that night. our opening sequence is of one of the children dreaming about that night and waking up to a ghostly presence. The genre of our film is psycological hooror wich is a horror wich will play on the mind and scre you without making u jump or scream.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Our target audience are people who enjoy psycological horrors with a interesting but chilling story. It is for poeple who do enjoy watching films and enjoy figuring out story to a chilling story.we did loads of pre - production research before drawing up the story board or filming.we began to research horror title sequences to see how they were filmed like , angles , camera shots and also the order the cast and crew were showed. we also research famous title sequence designers such as kyle cooper who made and shot a number of great horror title sequences. also we researched music and sound as they seem to play a very large part of a opening sequence . for example the nightmare on elm street used such a great audio that without it the title sequnce would have been just plain.
we used all of the research to film our title sequence , for example we had all of the cast and crew showed in the correct order like a normal film would have and used music wich not only went with our film but made it.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I think that the company lionsgate would have made our film because psycological horrors and normal horrors are there main themes. examples of this would be saw,saw2,saw3,saw4,saw5 and saw 6.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The main focus is a phycological horror that explores the dangers and eeryness of using a ouikki board and waking the spirits in a house. As a group we decided to make the first scene reality and the rest a dream, this was difficult to do because we did not no how to mix them two together to make it look like we were switching to reality and then to his dream.we came up with the solution of editing the dream world by making it much darker and a little bit flickery , this helps you see the difference from reality and dream.this is one way we have developed the codes and convention because in most films dreams are in black and wight. Another way is the titles, we used them to kind of give a hint of the story to come . all of our txt is really jagged and unnerving , like a small child wrote it. A nother way we developed the codes and convetion is the music , because of copywright issues we couldnt use real songs so we had to find a suitable song/melody for the mood. the one we found i think thits prefectly as it is very unnerving and has a little sting at the end when the titles come up. All together i think our title definatly gives of the hint that it is a horror.Overall I think our opening sequence developed the codes and conventions of real media products but it had elements of regular media products.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

We dont have any certain age groups for our title sequence as any age can enjoy our type of production , i would advise it to be teenagers and over as some footage may be disturbing or un-nearving.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

we adress the audience by showing a normal man having a terrible nightmare wich we can all relate to. and then showing them the dream were the first thing you see is a ouijji board , hopefully this will catch the attention of our audience of horror lovers. because everyone has had one of those dreams were u toss and turn , mumble and wake up in a sweat hopefully this will catch the audiences attention.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Because i have never used the imac editing before we agreed as a team that i will do all the artistic design and leave the editing to the others. but i learnt how to do it anyway , i came across of alot of new programmes i have never heard of before like toaster wich waas terible , it cuts your work to the size it wants it to be. but still i have learnt alot of new skill on the imac.another programme wich we used was music maker were we cut down our song to fit and go with the title sequence, this was by far the most important programe we used wen trying to do the audio.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

From the preliminary task I have learnt how important storyboarding and organisation is key in producing a good media product. the preliminary task to make a continuety piece was definetly the most valuable as i learnt how to make storyboards, edit and how to arrange actors and the film crew in the credits. i still feel that i cannot edit very well and i do need practice but other than that it all went perfect. the only other thing i could think of is that sometimes our imax was in use and we could not edit so we had no choice but to do more research wich turned out to be a possitive thing.
overall i feel that we made a good opening sequence and i feel that it would definatly pass as a real film opening sequence.

props, setting and the script

Props:
because it is only a short title sequence we will not need many props . The most important prob is the jueegie board bacause it reflects the intire film. The other props were the candles to give the room a creepey effect and create light for the important parts of the shot.
The other props were a bed cover and a thew scattered pieces of clothing to create the illusion that we were in a childs room.

Setting:
The whole title sequence was filmed in my mums bedroom as it was the biggest in the house.
With all the props added to this room it really does become a scary atmosphere to play the jueegie board in !

The script:
Because we intended to make a spookey opening sequence we decided not to use a script and just use music to show what is hapening in the film.

We were going to shoot in Luke's bedroom to start off with but we thought his parents room would be more suitable beacuse it was plain and easy to adjust according to the jump in time periods. The whole opening was in one room.

the group/Actors

Emily Dann : she did the camera work as she didn't want to be in the actual film. she helped plan and organise when to film.

Georgia Covill :She played one of the children in the opening. She wore casual clothing to make herself look younger. She did alot of the editing and putting it together.

Luke Francis (me):I also played a character in the sequence i wore a casual shirt to dress down. i did alot of planning for the storyboard and research.

Diary

18th January- Me, Georgia Covill and Emily dann went to My house (the set) to film the first half of our opening. Ross, one of our actors came along too. This was successful as we did use some of the clips.

25th January- Me, Georgia, Emily and Rob McDonald went back to My house to film the second half. Dan also was with us as one of our actors. This was unsuccessful as once start editing we realised we needed to re-film as the clips were not long enough.

1st February- Me, Georgia, Emily and Rob went to re-film 2 shots as they were the shots that wasn't long enough.

8th February- This time Rob wasn't in school so we had to re-film the whole thing with me, Georgia, Emily, Dan and Alex stood in for Rob for us. However, this turned out a good thing as it was better this time than before.

Other changes me made...Apart from shooting we changed other things such as the ouji board. We was going to make a real one but because of suspicious troubles we used a piece of carboard and a glass to represent it. Also, we were going to use My younger sister and friends to play the children but in the end we couldn't find the same time schuedule for all of us to we used ourselves instead. We improvised on costumes as they dressed down to look more like children, plus the scenes were changed around alot during the different shootings we did.

Title

This is the first font we decided on because it was creepy and slightly disturbing. In the end we decided to use a less dramatic font and go with a more suttle but affective one.
